The EU's Ineffectiveness in Addressing Immigration: A Decade After the Lampedusa Tragedy

Giorgia Meloni, the leader of Italy's far-right party, is facing pressure to address the overwhelming influx of migrants to the country. While she has appealed to the European Union for help, previous attempts to find an EU-wide solution have failed, and there is little reason to believe this time will be different. France has even tightened security along its border with Italy and refused to take in migrants from Lampedusa. The EU's lack of solidarity between member states is a feature of the bloc, and Meloni's insistence on a European solution appears politically impotent. Additionally, a deal between the EU and Tunisia to stem illegal migration has been sabotaged by some member states, potentially using the Tunisian route as a "weapon of mass migration" to destabilize Italy. Ultimately, a unilateral solution may be necessary for Italy's migrant problem.
