The Yanomami, one of the largest Indigenous groups in the Amazon, are facing a crisis of malaria and malnutrition that their leaders say threatens their very existence. Illegal gold mining, aided and abetted by the administration of Jair Bolsonaro, has poisoned the water they drink and the fish they eat with mercury, thinned the population of animals they hunt, and ravaged their once-pristine swath of the Amazon. Critics are now accusing Bolsonaro of genocide, not only of indifference, but of a crime, for failing to respond to Yanomami pleas for food, medicine, and help evicting the miners.
