"Israel calls on Canada to confront its Nazi immigration past"

Israel's Special Envoy for Combating Antisemitism, Michal Cotler-Wunsh, has urged Canada to address its historical failure to allow enough Jewish immigrants during the Holocaust while allowing Nazis to immigrate. This comes after the resignation of Canada's speaker of the House of Commons lower chamber, who publicly praised a former Nazi soldier in Parliament. Cotler-Wunsh emphasized the need for Canada to acknowledge and come to terms with its history of allowing nearly 2,000 Nazis to immigrate after WWII, while implementing restrictive immigration policies towards Jewish victims. She also called for comprehensive education on antisemitism, the Holocaust, and WWII. Former Canadian federal justice minister Irwin Cotler has also criticized Canada's historical indifference and inaction regarding Nazis in the country, calling for transparency, accountability, and justice in addressing Canada's history with Nazi war criminals.
