Central America Parliament Removes Taiwan, Designates China as Permanent Observer

The Central American Parliament, known as Parlacen, has voted to expel Taiwan as a permanent observer and replace it with China, citing the United Nations' 1971 decision to recognize China as the legitimate representative of China. This move reflects China's growing economic influence in the region and its efforts to marginalize Taiwan. Taiwan's foreign ministry has condemned China's suppression of its international participation and has decided to withdraw from Parlacen immediately. China has been expanding its influence in Central America, with several countries breaking off diplomatic ties with Taiwan in recent years. The United States, which recognizes China diplomatically but maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan, opposes efforts to change the status quo in Taiwan.
