China Appoints First Ambassador to Taliban, Strengthening Diplomatic Relations

China has become the first country to name a new ambassador to Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover, as its envoy presented credentials at a ceremony in Kabul. The Taliban have not been officially recognized by any foreign government, and China did not indicate whether this appointment signaled wider steps towards formal recognition of the Taliban. The new envoy, Zhao Xing, is the first ambassador from any country to take up the post since August 2021. China's foreign ministry stated that this appointment is part of the normal rotation of ambassadors and aims to continue advancing dialogue and cooperation between China and Afghanistan.
