China's defence minister, General Li Shangfu, has warned that war with the US would be an "unbearable disaster" for the world, and called for the two superpowers to seek common ground. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, he accused the US of a "Cold War mentality" and said this was "greatly increasing security risks". The comments came after the US navy accused a Chinese destroyer of sailing "in an unsafe manner" near an American warship as it transited the Taiwan Strait with Canadian vessels.
