EU Considers Alternative Aid Plan for Ukraine Amid Hungary's Veto Threat

The European Union (EU) has a "Plan B" in place to bypass any potential Hungarian veto and provide Ukraine with 50 billion euros in aid as it continues to battle Russia's invasion. The EU's proposal to expand budget support for Ukraine is set to be voted on by member states in December, but concerns have been raised that Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has close ties with Moscow, may block the aid. If Hungary does veto the package, the EU has a workaround that involves each member state setting up their own bilateral aid package with Ukraine. However, unanimity is required for the decision on whether to start EU accession negotiations with Ukraine, which may be hindered by Orban's stance on the war.
