Iran and Taliban engage in deadly shootout over water rights on Afghan border.

Iran and the Taliban exchanged heavy gunfire on the border between Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province and Afghanistan's Nimroz province, killing and wounding troops. The clash comes amid rising tensions between the two countries over water rights, with Iran accusing the Taliban of opening fire first. The Taliban seized Afghanistan in August 2021, and Iran has maintained relations with the new rulers while calling on them to allow women and girls to go to school. Drought has been a problem in Iran for some 30 years, worsening over the past decade, and Iran has warned the Taliban not to violate its water rights to the Helmand River.
