Nordic and Swiss Security Ties with US National Guard Under Consideration

Switzerland, Finland, and Sweden are considering joining the U.S. National Guard's security partnership program, signaling a further expansion of American military ties across Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The National Guard's chief, Gen. Dan Hokanson, revealed the discussions with each country, highlighting their interest in deepening security cooperation relationships. This move reflects a shift away from long-standing policies of military nonalignment and demonstrates the impact of Russia's war on neighboring nations. The National Guard's State Partnership Program facilitates training and education exchanges between U.S. troops and foreign militaries, helping them align their operations with Western military standards. The program has been instrumental in assisting former Soviet states and Ukraine in particular. Finland recently joined NATO, while Sweden is awaiting approval, and Switzerland is reviewing the possibility of participating in the program.
