"Taiwan's Lai Seeks Japanese Support to Counter Beijing's Influence"

Taiwanese presidential front runner William Lai Ching-te has stated that Japanese support in regional security could help deter security threats from mainland China. Lai, who is leading in the polls ahead of Taiwan's presidential election, emphasized the strategic importance of Taiwan and expressed the need for cooperation with Japan to exert deterrence against potential Chinese aggression. He rejected the 1992 consensus and asserted Taiwan's sovereignty, stating that accepting the consensus would mean giving up its sovereignty. Lai's comments come amidst increased military exercises by Beijing in the Taiwan Strait and the East China Sea.
