US Troops Deployed to Djibouti in Preparation for Sudan Embassy Evacuation

The US is sending additional troops to Djibouti in case of an emergency evacuation of American citizens from Sudan, where a power struggle between two leaders of the ruling council has resulted in over 330 deaths and a humanitarian crisis. The US embassy in Khartoum has advised citizens to remain sheltered in place indoors, and the State Department has not disclosed the number of US citizens in Sudan. The US secured a 10-year lease for its military base in Djibouti in 2014 and pays $63m annually.
