Reporter's Notebook: Haiti's Struggle for Survival in the Streets

Armed groups control nearly 80% of Haiti's capital city, leading to a massive spike in violence, kidnappings, and death. The violence has also led to a deepening nationwide food crisis, with famine-like conditions recently recorded in the country. Gangs have cut off access to Haiti's locally grown food, and farmers and wholesalers have been robbed, kidnapped, and killed. The UN has put out a humanitarian call for more than $700 million to address the crisis in Haiti, only 13% of which has been funded.
