A year after Russia took control of Mariupol, plans for reconstruction are under way, but former residents are skeptical. Russia has used their efforts to rebuild the city for positive press, with President Vladimir Putin visiting a new apartment building as an example back in March. Russia put together plans for Mariupol's future as a Russian city almost immediately after the siege ended. The plan breaks down reconstruction by neighborhood, and projects a return to the city’s pre-war population by 2030. To some former residents, even a Ukrainian-controlled Mariupol would not be enough for them to go back.
