Artforum Editor Fired Amid Controversy Over Pro-Palestine Open Letter
TL;DR
Artforum editor-in-chief David Velasco was fired after publishing and supporting an open letter expressing support for Palestine during the Israel-Hamas conflict. The letter, signed by thousands, criticized cultural institutions for their silence on Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. Velasco's termination sparked controversy, with some artists praising his leadership while others criticized the magazine's stance. The firing came after pressure from advertisers and a high-profile collector who contacted artists whose work he owns. Velasco expressed disappointment, citing Artforum's commitment to free speech.
