The letter, titled "Writers Against the War on Gaza," referred to Israel's actions as a "genocide." The magazine's editor, Jake Silverstein, stated that Hughes' signing of the letter violated the company's policy on public protest. Hughes had previously signed another letter protesting the publication's coverage of trans issues. Another contributing writer, Jamie Lauren Keiles, also announced that they would no longer be contributing to the publication, citing concerns about the Times' coverage of various issues.
