Migrants surge through treacherous Darien Gap as governments struggle to respond

Migrants are passing through the once impenetrable Darien jungle between Colombia and Panama in record numbers, with over 400,000 crossing this year, primarily from Venezuela. The journey, which used to take a week or more, is now being completed in as little as 2 ½ days with the help of guides and porters. The increasing flow of migrants has strained the governments of Panama and Costa Rica, prompting the United States to resume deportation flights to Venezuela. The Biden administration has also announced plans to grant Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan migrants already in the US, but those arriving after July 31 will not be eligible.
