Senegal's navy has intercepted four boats carrying over 600 people attempting to reach Spain's Canary Islands, a gateway to Europe. The navy has increased patrols to combat irregular migration, and witnesses reported migrants jumping off a boat to avoid arrest. In August alone, over 2,690 people arrived in the Canary Islands from Senegal and Morocco, more than double the number from the same month last year.
