The Deadly Reality of Migration by Sea.

The recent boat tragedy off the coast of Greece has exposed Pakistan's migration problem, with many young Pakistanis risking their lives to reach Europe due to a lack of decent work and economic security in their home country. The victims of the tragedy could have been alive today if there were better employment opportunities, economic security, and political stability in Pakistan. Approximately 90% of Pakistanis who arrived in Italy in recent years have used a human smuggler, and the market for smuggling has increased as Pakistan's economy has deteriorated. Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency has been tasked with cracking down on smugglers and agents, but the implementation of legislation is abysmal, and the human trafficking cartels are known to have strong links with certain influential political families in central Punjab, as well as the military and bureaucracy.
