Russian Military Unit Tracked Through Frontline Selfies.

Russian soldiers from a Chechen-affiliated unit called RUS, which trained at a special academy in eastern Chechnya, have been posting selfies on social media from the front lines in southern Ukraine, revealing important aspects of military operations and allowing RFE/RL's Russian Service to identify and geolocate their positions. The Akhmat special forces unit and RUS are essentially the same thing, with RUS being the legal entity behind it. The issue of soldiers posting on social media has been a problem for Russia's military since at least the beginning of the invasion in February 2022, and possibly going back years to Russia's intervention in Syria in 2015.
