Multiple Earthquakes Devastate Ecuador and Peru, Leaving Dozens Dead

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.8 shook southern Ecuador and northern Peru, killing at least 14 people and injuring 126 others. The earthquake caused damages to health care centers, schools, and homes, and trapped several people under rubble. Rescue teams are working to save people, but their work is made difficult by downed lines that interrupted telephone and electricity service. Ecuador is particularly prone to earthquakes, and in 2016, a quake centered farther north on the Pacific Coast killed more than 600 people.
