A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 (7.5 according to USGS) has struck off the coast of Taiwan, causing buildings to collapse and leaving thousands without power. Japan issued a tsunami alert for the southern Japanese island group of Okinawa, but the threat has since passed. The earthquake, the strongest in 25 years, prompted evacuations and caused damage to buildings and infrastructure. Aftershocks have been reported, and internet outages are being registered in parts of Taiwan.
