Devastating floods claim lives and cause widespread destruction in North India

Heavy monsoon rains in India have caused landslides and flash floods, resulting in at least 15 deaths and the closure of schools in New Delhi. The northern hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand were the worst affected, with 10 deaths reported. In neighboring Pakistan, authorities are on alert for the first flooding of the season after India diverted waters from dams into the Ravi River. Evacuations are underway in eastern Punjab province, and at least 80 people have died in weather-related incidents since June 25.
