Iceland's Uncertain Fate: Volcanic Threat Looms

Residents in south-west Iceland are anxiously waiting to see if a volcano under the Reykjanes peninsula will erupt, with civil protection authorities warning that even if it doesn't, it could be months before evacuated residents can return home. The seismic activity has caused a crack in the town of Grindavik and the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal resort has been closed. Iceland, located above a volcanic hotspot, experiences eruptions every four to five years, with the last disruptive eruption occurring in 2010. Scientists predict that a new eruption would likely produce lava but not an ash cloud.
