Massive Floods in Australia: Hundreds Rescued and Evacuated

More than 300 people have been evacuated from towns along Australia's Great Barrier Reef after heavy rain caused flooding in northern regions of Queensland state. The area received triple the average December rainfall in just 40 hours, cutting off several tourist towns and prompting the closure of Cairns Airport. No deaths or serious injuries have been reported, but authorities are concerned about the loss of drinking water and the ongoing rain forecast. Australian defence forces have been put on standby for rescue and relief efforts.
