Australia's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has proposed a referendum between October and December this year to recognise the nation's Indigenous people in its constitution. The proposed changes include adding an additional chapter to the constitution and establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. To change the constitution, the government must secure a double majority in the referendum, with more than 50% voters voting in favour nationally, plus a majority of voters in a majority of the states backing the change.
