The mosque has been criticised on social media for its lavishness, with many Egyptians struggling to afford basic necessities due to the country's deepening economic crisis. The mosque is the second-biggest in Africa and has broken three world records, including for the heaviest chandelier and the highest pulpit. President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi attended the opening event, which was described by state media as showing Egypt's "grandiosity".
