El Salvador Promises Tough Action Following Police Officer's Murder

El Salvador has deployed thousands of soldiers and police officers to Nueva Concepcion after a police officer was killed by an alleged gang member. President Nayib Bukele has vowed to seek out those responsible and the entire gang structure and collaborators still hiding in the area. The government's nationwide crackdown on gangs has won widespread support but sparked concerns about human rights abuses. The government has declared a "state of exception" suspending key civil liberties and extended the order 14 times since. More than 68,000 suspects have been detained since last year as part of the continuing crackdown.
