Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appears to have the upper hand heading into a presidential election runoff on Sunday, after surviving multiple political crises during his two-decade tenure. Erdogan has portrayed himself as an ally to Turkey's Islamist, religious conservatives and nationalists who has stood up to the West, bolstered Turkey's defense industry and taken a hardline against militant Kurdish separatists. Erdogan could govern Turkey until 2029 if he wins, and his success would be "good news for other right-wing populists and strongmen," according to Daron Acemoglu, a professor of economics at MIT.
