Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, who faces up to 25 years in prison on treason charges for criticizing Russia’s war against Ukraine, has condemned his trial as politically motivated and a travesty of justice. He remained defiant in his final statement to the court, rejecting the judge’s call that he must show remorse. The U.S. State Department has described the charges as false and sanctioned Russian officials involved in the case for “gross violation of human rights.” Kara-Murza is a longtime Putin critic who campaigned for international sanctions against Russian officials responsible for state repression of Russian activists, politicians and whistleblowers.
