Pentagon obstructs U.S. participation in international war crimes investigations.

The Pentagon is blocking U.S. cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigations of suspected war crimes in Ukraine, according to Beth Van Schaack, the State Department’s ambassador-at-large for global criminal justice. The Pentagon has concerns that cooperation with the ICC could lead to the prosecution of U.S. troops deployed abroad. Van Schaack argued that sharing relevant information about suspected war crimes in Ukraine with the Hague court would not raise potential legal risks for U.S. troops and pledged to fight any such effort by the court.
