Poland has announced a referendum on the EU's policy on asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa, scheduled for October 15, the same day as parliamentary elections. The ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) aims to make migration a major electoral issue to maintain power and prevent the opposition Civic Platform from gaining ground. Poland, along with Hungary, has rejected the EU's asylum seeker proposal. The PiS has also planned referendums on the sell-off of state-owned firms and raising the retirement age.
