Polling stations in Turkey have closed after a high voter turnout in one of the most consequential elections in the country's history. The election could end President Erdogan's 20-year rule and have implications beyond Turkey's borders. The presidential vote will decide not only who leads Turkey but also how it is governed, where its economy is headed, and the shape of its foreign policy. Erdogan's main challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, heads a six-party alliance and is within touching distance of breaking the 50-percent threshold needed to win in the first round. If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff will be held on May 28.
