US urges India to address religious violence against minorities.

The US State Department has released its annual report on religious freedom, listing attacks against religious minorities including Muslims and Christians in India. A senior US official has urged India to condemn persistent religious violence and hold accountable those who engage in rhetoric that is dehumanising towards religious minorities. The report pointed to concerns about home demolitions against Muslims and public flogging by police of Muslims in Gujarat, Modi’s home state. The USCIRF has recommended that the State Department put India on a blacklist over its record, but it is virtually certain that India will be spared.
