Pope Francis has given a mixed response regarding blessings for same-sex couples, causing confusion and controversy. If a same-sex couple asks for a blessing on their illicit conjugal union, it cannot be granted. However, if the couple seeks a blessing to strengthen their commitment to live chastely and in accordance with Church teaching, it may be considered. The ambiguity surrounding this issue is reminiscent of the controversy surrounding divorced and remarried couples receiving Communion after the publication of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia in 2016.
