The Invisible Growth of Black Immigrants in the U.S.

Black immigrants are a growing population in the US, but they often feel invisible and their cultures and histories are not recognized. Nashville, Tennessee has a long history of Black migration, but the presence of enslaved people on former plantations has been erased from many historical sites. Public historian Learotha Williams argues that acknowledging the past is important for understanding identity and connecting to a community. Black immigrants in particular struggle to have their presence recognized, despite making up 20% of all Black Americans.
