Controversy Erupts as Transgender Swimmer, 50, Competes Against Teens and Shares Locker Room

Parents of young female athletes in Canada have expressed concerns after a 50-year-old transgender swimmer competed in women's events and shared a locker room with children during a meet. The swimmer, Melody Wiseheart, participated in several events, including the women's 1500m freestyle, and placed second. Swimming Canada stated that access to changing rooms is determined by facility policies and applicable law, and minors routinely share change room space with adults. The international governing body for the sport, World Aquatics, banned male-to-female transgender athletes from competing in women's events in 2022, except for those who transitioned before age 12 or the early stages of puberty.
