Global Concerns Rise Over Social Media Platforms' Data Collection Practices

Top members of France's National Assembly have recommended that MPs "limit" their use of social media apps and messaging services, including Chinese-owned TikTok, American platforms such as Snap and Meta's WhatsApp and Instagram, alongside Telegram and Signal. The lawmakers' main issue with foreign social media apps is that Chinese and American laws are extraterritorial, and the personal data gathered via the platforms could be used by foreign intelligence services. The lawmakers' decision to call out foreign platforms from both the US and China was welcomed as a move towards European sovereignty.
