Repatriation of Cultural Treasures: Netherlands Returns Artifacts to Indonesia and Sri Lanka

The Netherlands has agreed to return hundreds of precious artefacts, including a gem-encrusted bronze cannon and the "Lombok treasure," to Indonesia and Sri Lanka, acknowledging its colonial past. This marks the first time the Netherlands is returning objects that should never have been in its possession, according to Culture Minister Gunay Uslu. The decision comes after a 2020 report recommended the unconditional return of cultural objects looted during the colonial era. The Netherlands has been grappling with its colonial legacy and recently, King Willem-Alexander formally apologized for the country's role in the slave trade.
