Russia Deploys Troops to Guard Nuclear Reactors Amid Ukraine Tensions

Russia has stationed soldiers on the roofs of several buildings at Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since March 2022. The move is likely due to Russia's increasing concern about a major Ukrainian offensive. The British Ministry of Defense warns that the move increases the chances of damage to the plant's safety systems if fighting takes place around the plant. However, direct catastrophic damage to the reactors is unlikely under most plausible scenarios involving infantry weapons because the structures are heavily reinforced. The situation at the plant isn't getting any better due to ongoing fighting in the area, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
