Egyptian TV Presenter Among 12 Sentenced to Death in Drug Trafficking Case

Egyptian state media reported that TV presenter Sarah Khalifa was among 12 defendants sentenced to death by hanging for their alleged role in a drug trafficking network. Nine others received life sentences, seven were acquitted, and the group was fined 500,000 Egyptian pounds. Prosecutors said the network imported substances for synthetic drug production and authorities seized about 750 kilograms of narcotics. Khalifa, who has a large Instagram following, reportedly wept during sentencing. CNN could not independently verify all footage.
