Kyiv’s new school year goes underground amid ongoing Russian strikes

Kyiv began the new academic year with classes held in basement shelters as Russia’s drone and missile attacks continued to target the capital. Air-raid alerts sounded about 60 times in Kyiv in the period leading up to the start of the school year, with dozens killed and many injured in the Kyiv region. President Zelensky visited a school shelter, and officials noted that enrollment is down compared with prewar levels as families relocate; UNICEF says about 1.8 million Ukrainian children are living abroad or displaced.
