Putin’s battlefield hype vs. ISW’s August 2026 reality check

ISW rebutts Putin’s Sept 1–2 claims of rapid Russian gains in Ukraine, noting August 2026 saw only about 90 sq km of territory seized or consolidated—far less than Putin’s 270 sq km assertion and well short of last year’s pace. Specific claims (Svyatohirsk reach, Kozacha Lopan seizure, encirclement of Ukrainian battalions) are not supported by evidence. Ukrainian forces, including counteroffensives in Lyman/Oleksandrivka, reportedly gained about 129.81 sq km in August. Russian casualties rose with modest territorial gains. Zelensky replaced the Ukrainian Ground Forces commander; Ukraine continued long-range strikes into Russia, while Russia expanded Geran drone production at the Alabuga SEZ. The Kremlin’s rhetoric appears aimed at cognitive warfare to sustain domestic support while showing no willingness to freeze the frontline or negotiate on Russia’s terms.
