Schmidt, who took office in September 2025, called the gesture inappropriate but stated it was a private event not intended for public consumption. The clip, first reported by the Samoa Observer, has drawn sharp criticism from historians who link the incident to concerns about authoritarianism and Schmidt's recent restrictions on press access.
