Japan Unveils Type 25 Stand-off Missiles, Formalizes Long-Range Defense Push
Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force announced the first operational deployment of two domestically developed long-range missiles, redesignated as Type 25: the 25SSM (ground‑launched, about 1,000 km range) and the HVGP variant 25HGP (initially several hundred kilometers, hypersonic). The HVGP will be used for island defense with longer-range versions under development. The systems are slated for future ship- and air-launched variants by FY2027, and additional fielding at Camp Kamifurano and Camp Ebino in FY2026. The move marks a doctrinal shift toward stand-off deterrence against regional threats from China and North Korea.
