HDMI 2.2 lands in tiers, but real gains hinge on future devices
HDMI 2.2 boosts bandwidth up to 96 Gbps across three tiers (64, 80, 96 Gbps), enabling features like uncompressed 4K at 240Hz and 8K at 60Hz (with potential subsampling/compression options) and the Latency Indication Protocol for better AV sync. Despite the upgrade, TVs and devices aren’t expected to fully adopt HDMI 2.2 for several years, meaning HDMI 2.1 ports will remain the practical standard for most users. If you do upgrade, you’ll need HDMI 2.2-certified cables (Ultra96) to access new features. For gaming today, 4K/120Hz remains the ceiling, and 8K content is scarce, so overall, don’t expect a dramatic home-theater shift yet.
