Progressive Aisha Wahab Edges Hernandez to Win Swalwell Seat in CA Special Election
California state Senator Aisha Wahab won the special election to fill former Representative Eric Swalwell's seat, leading fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez as results showed about 53% to 47% with 95% counted. Backed by the California Democratic Party and progressive groups, Wahab will serve the remainder of Swalwell's term and faces Hernandez again in November for a full term in a newly redrawn district; Wahab highlighted her journey from foster care to Congress and the district's history-making vote for the first Afghan American in Congress.
