"Chinese County Incentivizes Young Brides with Cash Rewards"
Changshan county in eastern China is offering a cash reward of 1,000 yuan ($137) to couples if the bride is aged 25 or younger, as part of efforts to incentivize young people to get married and address the declining birth rate. The county also provides childcare, fertility, and education subsidies for couples with children. China's marriage rates hit a record low in 2022, and the fertility rate is estimated to have dropped to a record low of 1.09 in the same year. Factors such as high childcare costs, gender discrimination, traditional stereotypes, low consumer confidence, and concerns over the economy contribute to the reluctance of young Chinese to marry and have children.
