Tragedy Strikes $9 Aid Event: 78 Dead in Stampede.
At least 78 people have died and dozens more were injured in a stampede at a school in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, during an aid event where merchants were distributing about $9 per person. Witnesses said the stampede was caused by someone shooting into the air, hitting an electrical wire that fell on the ground and caused electroshocks, triggering more panic in the crowd. The Houthi-run Interior Ministry blamed the merchants for the lack of organization and coordination with ministry officials. Yemen has been suffering from a civil war between the Houthi rebels and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, which has claimed the lives of at least 150,000 people by the end of 2021, according to a United Nations report.
