Alice Brock, Muse of 'Alice's Restaurant,' Passes Away at 83
Alice Brock, the inspiration behind Arlo Guthrie's iconic song "Alice's Restaurant Massacree," has passed away at 83. Brock, who ran a restaurant in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, became a cultural figure through Guthrie's 18-minute song recounting a Thanksgiving Day incident in 1965 that led to his arrest and avoidance of the Vietnam War draft. The song, which became a protest classic, was part of Guthrie's debut album and inspired a movie and cookbook. Brock, who lived in Provincetown, Massachusetts, for 40 years, was remembered fondly by Guthrie.
