"Ultrasound Advances Accelerate Alzheimer's Drug Delivery to the Brain"
Scientists at West Virginia University's Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute have conducted a pilot study using focused ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier, allowing Alzheimer's drugs to enter the brain more effectively. This method was tested on three patients with mild Alzheimer's, who received monthly doses of the drug Aduhelm along with the ultrasound treatment. PET scans indicated a 32% greater reduction in amyloid plaques in treated brain regions compared to untreated areas. While the results are promising, larger studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety, including potential risks like brain bleeding and swelling.
